October 13, 2012: An intense (albeit one-sided at the time) 12-year rivalry appears to come to an end as Boise State beats Fresno State and Derek Carr 20-10 behind a stifling defense and 122 yards from sixth-year senior running back D.J. Harper in Bronco Stadium.
October 10, 1982: The first basketball game ever played in the BSU Pavilion, now ExtraMile Arena, is not a Boise State game, but an NBA exhibition between the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Supersonics. The Blazers’ 113-109 victory drew a crowd of 8,428 to the new facility.
October 9, 1919: The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Chicago White Sox, 10-5, to win the World Series five games-to-three. A year later it was learned that eight White Sox players were involved in throwing the Series, leading to the infamous “Black Sox Scandal”.
Maddux Madsen now turns his attention to New Mexico this Saturday in the friendly confines of Albertsons Stadium. And they should be friendly confines. Nobody’s taking the loss at Notre Dame harder than Madsen. But it was a team defeat.
October 7, 2006: Boise State reaches the halfway point of its first undefeated season, improving to 6-0 with a 55-14 rout of Louisiana Tech at Bronco Stadium. The Bulldogs scored first and last, but the Broncos put up 55 points in between.
When Boise State played Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, the Broncos were David and the Sooners were Goliath, of course. But that was more history and tradition—woven in with an inherent talent differential.
Boise State is going to have to score serious points Saturday at Notre Dame, because the Fighting Irish are likely to. If one of three Broncos running backs can have some early success, that will keep Nate Potter’s options open.
September 30, 1999: After 40 seasons, the San Francisco Giants play their final game at Candlestick Park. Appropriately, it was against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Inappropriately, the Dodgers won 9-4.
September 29, 1990, 35 years ago today: Boise State faces a coaching legend in a game at Long Beach State. At the age of 72, George Allen had come out of retirement to coach Long Beach—and would pass away at the end of the year.
September 26, 1998: We talked about Dirk Koetter’s head coaching debut at Boise State three weeks ago. It’s worth circling back to the subject of Koetter to revisit one of the most storied drives in Broncos history.
