Storylines changed almost drive-by-drive last Saturday in Boise State’s win at Air Force—from Maddux Madsen out, to Madsen back in, to 11 penalties in the first half to one in the second half, to some big defensive stops interspersed with inexplicable deficiencies in defending the pass.
September 23, 1973: Four field goals by George Blanda lead the Oakland Raiders to a 12-7 win over the Miami Dolphins, who suffer their first loss after the previous season’s 17-0 record. That snapped the Dolphins’ 18-game winning streak, the NFL record at the time.
September 22, 1950, 75 years ago today: The inaugural game is played in old Bronco Stadium (then new Bronco Stadium), the wooden structure that sat parallel to the Boise River overlapping the land on which the current stadium stands.
September 19, 1981: Idaho State comes to Bronco Stadium to face defending Division I-AA national champion Boise State and stuns the Broncos, 21-10.
September 18, 2019: San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy nabs his 2,000th career victory, an 11-3 triumph over Boston at Fenway Park. Bochy managed his final game with the Giants 11 days later and totaled 2,003 wins at that point.
Saturday marks what could be the final game ever between Boise State and Air Force, and the Broncos would love to come out of it with a positive. The Falcons have given them more trouble than anyone else in the Mountain West, beating them four times in 10 tries.
September 16, 1955: The birthday of a Milwaukee baseball icon. Robin Yount, the No. 3 overall pick in the 1973 draft, became the youngest player in the majors the following year when he was named the Brewers’ starting shortstop at the age of 18.
September 15, 2018: A highly-anticipated ESPN telecast turns into a one-sided show, as No. 24 Oklahoma State burns No. 17 Boise State 44-21 in Stillwater, OK.
September 12, 2015, 10 years ago today: Eagle High graduate Tanner Mangum stuns his boyhood hometown team, throwing a scrambling 35-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Juergens on fourth-and-seven with 45 seconds left.
