Boise State men’s basketball announced an old-fashioned player signing last week. It’s a true freshman, Kaur Tomann from Estonia, a 6-9 forward who played for his country’s U18 team in the FIBA European Championships last summer.
May 12, 1951: The birthday of one of the NBA’s most underappreciated coaches. George Karl won 1,175 games with six different franchises and was NBA Coach of the Year with the Denver Nuggets in 2013. Karl took his teams to 22 postseason appearances in 27 seasons.
May 11, 2016, 10 years ago today: Washington’s Max Scherzer ties the major league record for strikeouts in a game by fanning 20 batters in a 3-2 win over Detroit. Scherzer had a chance at 21 as James McCann came up with two outs in the ninth.
May 8, 2011, 15 years ago today: Phil Jackson’s 20-year coaching career ends on an ignominious note, as the L.A. Lakers are pummeled 122-86 by the Dallas Mavericks to complete a sweep in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The ending couldn’t diminish Jackson’s body of work, though.
May 7, 1988: Caldwell native Gary Stevens, who got his horse racing start at Les Bois Park while a student at Capital High in the late 1970s, rides Winning Colors to victory in the 114th running of the Kentucky Derby.
