Writers often joke about overreactions to Week 1 football results. Some losses can’t be ignored (hello, Huskies), but Boise State’s loss at UCF last Thursday needs to be kept in perspective.
And they still kept it close
Boise State was outgained 573 yards to 283. The Broncos managed just 20 on the ground while the UCF was gashing them for 255. From late in the first half until midway through the fourth, Boise State went nearly 30 minutes without a first down.
Depending on ‘dependable depth’
Boise State coach Andy Avalos coined a term last March that would be a theme all the way through spring football and fall camp. Tonight, we’ll find out if “dependable depth” is a thing as the Broncos take on UCF in the Bounce House on ESPN.
Broncos football: Talkin’ tight ends
Yes, John Bates is off to the Washington Football Team. But Boise State has so much talent at tight end, it’s going to be fascinating to see what happens there, and how that figures in to offensive coordinator Tim Plough’s offense.
21st century body of work
There’s a game Thursday night between two of the Group of 5’s flagship programs. Whether it’s Boise State or UCF that’s the leader of the pack depends on your perspective. But it’s pretty easy to compare the big picture, as both schools joined Division I-A in 1996.
The return of “Inferno Day”
(TOM SCOTT’S COLUMN WILL RETURN TUESDAY, AUGUST 31.) If “Inferno Day” works as well as it has in the past, it’ll help Boise State immensely in its trip to UCF a week from Thursday.
“Hank will be runnin’ with the 1s”
When Hank Bachmeier made his college football debut two years ago at Florida State, he played with reckless abandon. No pressure. Nothing to lose.
Broncos defense: Pessimists vs. optimists
The more cynical among us question how well the Boise State defense can play this year. The Broncos have a new defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, edge coach, safeties coach and cornerbacks coach.
The super-senior toe
Special teams are a current topic as Boise State enters the final two weeks before the showdown at UCF. What kind of a super-senior year will punter and kickoff specialist Joel Velazquez have? It’s been a rollercoaster.
Broncos football: No portal for Cole
I’m taking a time-out today from the battle for the starting cornerback spots at Boise State to talk about one of the top backups.
