August 2, 1979: Thurman Munson, at that time the heart and soul of the New York Yankees, dies in a private plane crash at the age of 32. Munson was the Yankees’ catcher and captain when they won the World Series in 1977 and 1978.
August 1, 1978: Atlanta pitchers Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber hold Cincinnati’s Pete Rose hitless, snapping Rose’s 44-game hitting streak. The day before he had tied Wee Willie Keeler’s National League record (though Keeler’s from 1896-97 mark has since been amended to 45).
The value of being “pressed into service.” It has certainly paid off for the Boise State offensive line. Two years ago, it was still a much-maligned unit, coming off a season that saw the Broncos average just 3.1 yards per carry.
July 30, 2014, 10 years ago today: Seattle’s Felix Hernandez sets a modern major league record with his 14th consecutive start of seven or more innings pitched and two or fewer runs allowed. The big league record had been held since 1971 by Hall of Famer Tom Seaver when he was a New York Met.
July 29, 1994, 30 years ago today: After bouncing around in the CBA for five seasons, former Boise State star Chris Childs signs with the New Jersey Nets. It had been quite a journey to that point for Childs, who went undrafted in 1989.
July 26, 2013: Kris Bryant, making his home debut as the highest-drafted player ever to suit up for the Boise Hawks, smashes his first professional home run, a three-run shot that keyed a 9-1 victory over the Spokane Indians.
