This has been debated in recent days. Is Boise State-BYU a rivalry? Is it just one-sided animosity? It certainly isn’t Broncos-Vandals from the old days or BYU-Utah from time eternal.
Rypien hasn’t been able to let ‘er rip
Bryan Harsin talked extensively about Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien Monday. “I think it’s a really tough challenge for him (right now),” said Harsin.

So what does this weekend really mean?
Maybe we all need to do a calendar check. It’s the second day of October, and there are eight games remaining in Boise State’s regular season. As fragile as the Broncos looked in their 19-point home loss to Virginia, they do have some feathers in their collective cap.
No corner on the market on late kickoffs
Boise State won’t be home again until Wyoming comes to the blue turf on October 21. We won’t know when that game kicks off until Monday, October 9, or so. But everybody’s bracing for one of those 8:15 p.m. things (that turns into 8:26).
“BYU vs. USU should be a conference game”
Brad Rock of the Deseret News is down on BYU’s independent status and thinks the Cougars would be much better off in a conference. They have no interest in that, as Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson can attest.
Pump the brakes for these guys’ sake
Okay, so the Golden Era is over for Boise State. If you really, really think about it, well, how are Bronco players feeling right now? These are 18 to 23-year-old kids who are really hearing about it after the disappointing 19-point loss to Virginia on the blue turf.

You’ve heard of USA Today’s “Misery Index,” right? We’ve talked about it before, but never in a Boise State context. The feature zeroes in on the college football fan bases in the greatest amount of pain, and this week it puts Boise State at the top.
Now, if Virginia can prove it’s for real
For Boise State’s sake, I hope Virginia goes out now and validates its 42-23 thumping of the Broncos on the blue turf Friday night—a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
